Wycombe Abbey Brings Its Global Ambitions to Bangkok

By THE STANDARD TEAM

Wycombe Abbey, one of the UK’s most prominent independent girls’ schools, is celebrating its 130th year. To mark the milestone, the school is also expanding its Global Horizons programme, which connects students across its schools in mainland China, Hong Kong, and, most recently, its new campus in Thailand.

Across Asia, the network carries the name and legacy of the original Wycombe Abbey in Buckinghamshire. Its new Bangkok school, set on a sprawling 66-acre campus, brings the best of British education and heritage to a city where demand for international schooling continues to grow, as families increasingly prioritize a well-rounded, global education.

“As a school, we’ve always had strong connections in Asia, so it’s a natural fit for us,” says Peter Warren, Chairman of Wycombe Abbey’s Governing Council. “If you think you can deliver a first-class educational proposition, you want to go to markets where there’s demand, rather than markets where there may be less competition, but also less demand.”

Wycombe Abbey International School Bangkok enrols students from the British curriculum to IGCSEs and A Levels, preparing them for leading universities around the world. For students in Year 7 and above, boarding offers a home away from home: a chance to throw themselves into school life, pursue their passions and grow in independence, while building the resilience that matters more than ever.

“I think the great thing about there being so much competition is it creates real educational vibrancy. I think, from a parental perspective, what that gives is real choice, and you will always find the right school for your child,” says Fiona Angel, Founding Executive Headteacher at Wycombe Abbey in Bangkok.

Wycombe Abbey may be renowned for academic excellence, but life at the school goes well beyond the classroom. In Bangkok, the school partners with Thana City Country Club for golf, tennis, and squash facilities, letting students pursue extracurriculars well beyond academics.

“We offer elite sports, from a basketball programme to swimming, football, tennis and golf,” says Angel. “We’ve got the space to be able to do that and support those programmes, which we’re very proud of.”

A Global Network For Life

One of Wycombe Abbey’s most distinctive qualities is its vast international network, framed under the Global Horizons programme, connecting schools in Thailand, Hong Kong, Changzhou, Hangzhou, with Singapore poised to open in 2027 and Incheon, South Korea in 2030. Under the initiative, students will have the chance to collaborate digitally across campuses, whether for online concerts, art, or even newspaper projects, and will also have access to study abroad programmes.

As the world becomes increasingly connected, building a global network offers real value, something true international schools can offer their students.

“There’s real value in a global network,” says Warren. “Particularly as the schools get older and we start to produce our own alumni, they’ll have a network. Say, one of our students graduates and lands in Shanghai, and they’re able to connect with other graduates who might have gone to Wycombe in the UK or one of our schools in China, but there’ll be someone to support you professionally and socially.”

As today’s students grow into global citizens, connectivity and a lifelong network can only be advantageous. When you send your child to a school like Wycombe Abbey, you never know where their ambitions will take them, which is why a programme like the Global Horizons initiative will prepare them for a life beyond the school walls.

Education in an Increasingly Changing World

Across its network of schools, Wycombe Abbey follows the British curriculum, with IGCSE and A-Level pathways leading to university. The British curriculum is unique because it lets you focus on your strengths and capabilities.

“What’s great about this curriculum is that from Year 10 onwards, it gives students a choice,” says Angel. “If a student isn’t interested in humanities, it allows them to really focus on their sciences and perhaps explore some creative subjects alongside that. By Year 11 and 12, students don’t have to pursue something they’re not good at. There’s an opportunity to dive into what they like.”

As students progress, they narrow their focus to three or four A Level subjects they enjoy and excel at. Beyond the core curriculum, the school’s Carrington Programme lets students pursue independent research through the Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Students choose their own topic and produce an extended piece of research, which is the kind of self-directed work that prepares them for university. Along the way, they sharpen their critical thinking and research skills and learn to work independently. These are qualities that help them stand out as education becomes increasingly competitive worldwide, with graduates going onto secure places at leading universities worldwide, including Oxford and Cambridge.

“These projects allow students to research something in real depth and learn to work independently, and learn these skills ahead of university,” says Angel. “It’s great because they are interested in what they’re learning, and you get marks for the process as much as the outcome. It can be a practical project, a report, or even creating an artifact of some kind.”

These days, there’s no escaping digitization or the sweeping impact AI may have on education. For students at Wycombe Abbey, it’s important to instill a sense of purpose and help them become well-rounded, because that’s what matters as you grow older.

“The real education is about making sure that we encourage students to not just receive information, but to be curious, to ask questions, and be critical thinkers, and to say if they think that something is not right,” she says. “We’ve got three values here: kindness, joy, and purpose. It’s really important for children to come to school with a sense of purpose and to know why they’re there.”

Ultimately, education is human-centric, and we also prioritize exposure to after-school clubs and extracurriculars.

“Our clubs are student-led,” says Angel. “Clubs and societies help children develop passions, try new things, be brave, and build resilience. It’s also about finding a passion and helping them deepen it so they understand who they are, what they love doing, and have tried lots of different things.”

The school offers a wide range of after-school clubs tailored to student interests, from maths to urban planning and even after-school golf.

A Home Away From Home

Boarding sits at the heart of Wycombe Abbey, with its vertical approach to student integration.

“There’s lots of interaction between the years,” says Warren. “One of the things Wycombe Abbey is most recognized for in the UK is the way we build boarding houses where the girls are incredibly close to each other across the years.”

Being a boarder at Wycombe Abbey means students have a slightly longer school day, and boarding gives extracurricular activities the time they deserve.

“Pursuing these hobbies or passions outside the classroom has become incredibly important, especially in this digital age.”

Here, a typical school day ends at four pm, with an hour-and-a-half lunch break. After classes end, most boarders go to an activity or after-school club before buses take them back to the boarding houses.

“Quite a few of our boarders are on the elite sports program, so they will do a sports practice every morning before school and then go to breakfast,” says Angel.

“I was down for dinner last night at 7 pm, and one of our junior golfers was just coming off the green. That’s the kind of lifestyle boarders can have here,” she says.

At the end of the day, boarding students eat dinner together, then have downtime to relax and unwind with games and whatever they choose to do.

Choosing The Right School

“Choosing the right school for your child can be a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack,” says Angel. “You go through a checklist, and parents are sensible to do that, and it’s important to know your child and their potential, because not every child excels in the same way.”

Her advice to parents is to do the spreadsheet exercise, but also to trust what feels right, and then ask: where will my child truly be known, and where will they have the opportunity to thrive?

“Ultimately, you want your child to be happy; that’s the most important thing.”
