CP and Boonrawd Unveil Joint Venture in China Push

By THE STANDARD TEAM

Boonrawd Brewery has announced a joint venture with Charoen Pokphand Group (CP) to establish CP Boonrawd Beverages Trading (Beijing). Bhurit Bhirombhakdi, Boonrawd’s CEO and fourth-generation heir, announced the news on Instagram, pictured alongside CP Chairman Soopakij Chearavanont.

While details of the joint venture have yet to be disclosed, it marks a significant step for Boonrawd Brewery, the maker of Singha and Leo beer, as it builds its presence in China.

Information regarding the investment size, product portfolio, and ownership split has yet to be shared.

While details will likely follow soon, the joint venture highlights a growing appetite for China’s vast market, with its high barriers to entry and its own set of regulations. CP knows the terrain well because of its deep roots on the mainland, making the conglomerate a fitting partner for Boonrawd’s expansion.

CP’s experience in China spans over four decades, following steady expansion in agribusiness and food, and has since expanded into property and automotive. The company also runs a beverage business through CP Beverage (Beijing) Co., Ltd.

The joint venture shows how much a strategic partner matters for a conglomerate like Boonrawd navigating the Chinese market, known for its hyper-intense competition and fast-moving consumer trends. It’s also worth noting that through the JV, Boonrawd isn’t simply exporting its wide product portfolio to a new market. It’s setting up a new legal entity altogether, with a base directly in the market it intends to capture. This highlights the company’s long-term commitment to an untapped market like China.

The JV also points towards a strategic shift in Boonrawd’s expansion blueprint. The Chinese market, while it has its own barriers to entry, offers scale and an attractive population size. As Thailand’s economic growth remains stalled at 2 percent, conglomerates and businesses are seeking new growth engines and expansion beyond the core market. China itself, with its diverse population and young consumer base, is often seen as a bellwether for fast-moving consumer trends.

Chinese consumers are already familiar with Thai brands and trends, which means that there is deeply rooted cultural recognition to build on.

Key Takeaway

A JV signals long-term commitment. For Boonrawd, it offers a viable path to diversify its business with a trusted partner who can help it navigate a highly localized market. For CP Group, the JV will help broaden its product offering and expand its beverage distribution in a highly competitive but valuable market. For a conglomerate looking for new growth engines, Singha is a ready-made brand recognized among Chinese consumers, who already associate Thailand with travel, food, and lifestyle.
